The two clearest characteristics of these essays are Lewis's argumentative nature and his enormous ego. That being said, any reader who cares to delve into the contents (and many should) will find a wealth of fascinating reading. Lewis lacks the control and clarity of a John Ruskin or E.B. White, but the breadth and depth of his mind and interests cannot be disputed--though the conclusions reached and claims made may often be. Here, he tackles art, poetry, literature, history, and any other field that suits his fancy. The results, as might be expected, are variable, but what is seen here is one of the last of a quickly dying breed--the essayist who stimulates our thinking.
