(from the introduction) ...... We wrote this book because our experience convinced us it was needed. When we first went to live in the woods and build our log cabin in Kentucky, we did all the research we could in the available books on the subject. Everything sounded plain and simple, but whenever we actually confronted some problem, we would always find that nobody had mentioned it. There is a triple emphasis in this book. First, on extreme detail, to the point of tedium, some may think, but intended to clarify to the point of unmistakability. And we have tried also to discuss what not to do, and more important, why, for the benefit of other original thinkers.
