Reviews

YA-- Noted wildlife photographer Cox surveys the life cycle of the black bear in stunning photos that depict such events as cubs frolicking in the spring or scavenging for food. While the same information may be gleaned from an encyclopedia, the presentation here is far more engaging. This visual treat is sure to capture the attention of reluctant readers, students writing reports, or photography buffs. Sharp and bright, it won't disappoint.

There is no doubt that Cox is an accomplished and patient photographer. His photos have graced such publications as National Geographic, Sierra, and Field and Stream. In this book, Cox has sought to provide a year-round pictorial essay on the elusive black bear. While none of the shots are particularly unique, they are excellent close-ups of bears being bears. A brief text at the beginning of each of three sections (Spring, Summer, and Autumn to Winter) doesn't provide much more than introductory comments on the animal's lifestyle. As such, this book holds little value for readers wanting more detailed information on the bear's lifestyle. Its value lies in the carefully chosen photos that visually tell the story better than words ever could. Recommended where pictorial books are popular.
