Suter, Ronald

Suter aims at introducing Wittgenstein's later philosophy to nonphilosophers. He begins by explaining Wittgenstein's conception of philosophy as linguistic therapy and proceeds to his analyses of mental phenomena and his consideration of Augustine's beliefs about time, of how to distinguish dreaming from veridical perception, of the picture theory of language, and of rule-following. Among the philosophers whose arguments Suter's Wittgenstein discusses are Descartes, Hume, Russell, Moore, Ayer, and Malcolm. Suter writes at a level appropriate to his aim; but the result often is too superficial to be helpful and sometimes yields oversimplifications, e.g., on linguistic philosophy as done by Austin vis-a-vis Wittgenstein, Quine's objections to behaviorism, and Ayer's use of coherence to distinguish dream from reality. The book will help its readers to see what Wittgenstein's goal was but not, probably, whether he attained it. For large libraries.
