From book jacket: "This book is the first comprehensive account in English of Italy's railroad system and its checkered history. It begins with the first railroads built under the independent Italian states that were later united into the Kingdom of Italy. It describes how these companies fared in the new Kingdom, their lapses into state operation before the Italian State Railroad was set up in 1905, and the vicissitudes that it suffered before finally emerging in its present form. Additional chapters trace the history of the steam locomotive in Italy, the rise and fall of third rail and three-phase electrification, and the adoption of 3,000dc system that now handles the bulk of traffic. There are accounts of diesel traction, the evolution of carriages and wagons, trainworking and signalling, with a final chapter that desctibe the railroads as they are today and the new techniques being adopted. Appendices of particular value to the railroad historian list all present day FS electric locomotives, railcars, and motor coaches, FS diesel locomotives, tractors and railcars, FS steam locomotives and and tabulate all Italian main-line and minor railroads from 1839 until the present." Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. 208 pages with index.
