Book by Naff, Alixa
"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
Grade 7-12 Naff writes with admiration about her heritage as an Arab American. She recounts the antiquity and diversity of Arab culture; the origins, practices, and major sects of Islam; the success of enterprising Arab immi grants as peddlers and store owners; and the socio-economic and political successes of 20th-Century Arab Ameri cans. Naff states that although the Arab American community is sensitive to pro-Israel policies of the United States, the current conflict in the Middle East has awakened nationalistic pride in Arab Americans who advocate interna tional peace efforts, not terrorism. She says that Anti-Arab sentiment in the United States has had a positive effect on fostering a new political and cultural cohesiveness in the Arab diverse com munity. An abundance of captioned black-and-white photographs appear on almost every page. An informative and positive reference tool. Gerry Larson, Chewning Junior High School, Durham, N.C.
