Presents results of a hiring audit designed to detect discrimination by potential employers on the basis of foreign accent or appearance. The study was part of the General Accounting Office's congressionally mandated investigation of possible discrimination resulting from the employer sanctions provisions of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. Based on a summer 1989 hiring audit of randomly selected employers in Chicago and San Diego, the study found substantial disparities in the treatment of Hispanic and Anglo job seekers. A significant portion of the differences, the authors believe, is the result of discrimination (though not necessarily due to employer sanctions).
