About the Author:

Haber has written for journals, magazines, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). His practice is in developmental/behavioral pediatrics for Cook Children's Physician's Network and h holds an academic appointment from Texas Christian University in the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences.

From Booklist:

Pediatrician Haber, who works regularly with developmental and behavioral problems, stresses realism and careful attention to facts when dealing with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for ADHD is championed by a large and diverse band in which "entrepreneurism frequently overcomes logic." Elementary and high-school teachers, as well as school administrators, often urge parents to take a child to their physician for a prescription for Ritalin or another of the other putative ADHD drugs. Note that the parents are told to get a prescription, not to find out what, if anything, is wrong. Occasionally, Ritalin or another drug can play a role in treatment, but only after careful study has shown that the child's problem will probably be best served by it. Even then, Ritalin should be used for a relatively brief period only. Many cases are misdiagnosed, and unfortunately, some major disorders whose symptoms mimic those of ADHD grow very malign if not identified in time. Haber explodes myths, relays much scientific information, and makes many practical suggestions. William Beatty
