9780878425990: Roadside History of Illinois (Roadside History Series)

Did you know that Chicago was named for a wild onion? Or that the only president born in Illinois was Ronald Reagan? Or that the Ferris Wheel, processed cheese, the game of softball, the fly swatter, and the automatic dishwasher were all invented by Illinoisans? You ll find these stories and hundreds more in Roadside History of Illinois, an entertaining and revealing tour of the Prairie State s historical places.

Native Illinoisan Stan Banash describes the state s diverse history as he guides readers along its highways and byways, sometimes tracing routes with a history of their own (the Old Cumberland Road, the Trail of Tears, the Lincoln Highway, and U.S. Route 66, for examples). The engaging text is enhanced with 120 historical and modern photos, along with a map for each region. Old-timers, newcomers, and visitors alike will love this info-packed history.

Review:

The new book "Roadside History of Illinois" provides everything you didn't know about the Prairie State and then some in 496 fact-filled pages. Did you know that the only president born in Illinois was Ronald Reagan? Did you know that the Ferris wheel, processed cheese, the game of softball, the fly swatter and the automatic dishwasher were all invented by Illinoisans? This is a book to browse during a rainy evening. Wherever you live in Illinois or wherever you were born, you ll find some mention. The stories are enhanced by 120 photos, historical and modern, along with a map for each region. It's the most comprehensive travel guide about Illinois you'll find.--Bob Fallstrom --Decatur Herald-Review

Illinois is the fifth most populous state in the union. With Chicago in the northeast, small industrial cities and great agricultural productivity in central and northern Illinois, and natural resources like coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a diverse economic base and is a major transportation hub. The "Roadside History of Illinois" by Stan Banash is a 496 page compendium providing the reader with a unique history of this remarkable state using its systems of roads and highways to tour its historical places and attractions....[It] is informed, informative, superbly organized, deftly presented, and highly recommended for personal and community library American History collections in general, and Illinois History supplemental reading lists in particular.--James A. Cox --Midwest Book Review

Part history book and part travel guide this work seeks to guide readers to discover and savor the history, culture, and natural beauty of Illinois. In this quest author Stan Banash has surely succeeded.--John Weck --Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society
