The ideas and ideals of Carlyle and Ruskin, the taste of William Morris, exposed to the rich landscapes and even-tempered climate of the West became the California style, an exuberant expression of the arts-and-crafts movement singular to its time and location. This reprint of a 1974 exhibition catalog surveying the turn-of-the-century creative activity in California remains the single best source for information about the activities and attitudes of the period. It is a record of optimism and experiment, enthusiasm and imagination in which the arts were a part of daily life and an affirmation of the value of the work of man rather than machine. It is a record, too, of a time in which the beginnings of the environmental and wilderness-protection movements became a part of the consciousness of the inhabitants. These ties to the land are reflected in the integration of the diverse arts into the pattern of life. The essays by experts in the field include brief biographical sketches of the major artists, offering insights into their attitudes and goals. These are accompanied by excellent illustrations, well-documented and detailed with architectural plans and potters' marks. This is a most welcome reappearance of a thoughtful and comprehensive resource in a field of great interest to a wide variety of readers.
