Sam's efforts to find a grandmother are so successful that he discovers the problems of having too many grandmothers

PreS-Gr 2--Sam wishes constantly for a grandma. His search proves futile until he places a classified ad in the newspaper. Talk about results! Fifty-five grandmas, one with a llama, appear in no time and he decides to keep them all. However, their hovering and hugging soon overwhelm him. He places another ad, this one for boys and girls needing grandmas. Soon the ladies depart with new children to love. Only the one with the llama remains. This story is slight, and Fisher's pictures, with their flat perspective and cluttered layers of people, lack vitality. The skin and hair colors of many of the grandmas are drab and unappealing and none of the characters is particularly attractive. The grandma with the llama has an annoying wink that sets her apart but doesn't do much to attract the interest or affection of Sam or viewers. Recurring references to pickles and cookies are more puzzling than amusing. Much ado about very little.
