The items featured here span about 400 years, from the time of Spanish exploration through the cowboys of the late 1900s, and can be divided according to three types: artistic expressions such as paintings, sculptures, and photographs; functional items such as clothing, spurs, saddles, and bridles; and last, literary or printed items maps, books, newspapers, and documents. Topics covered include those on Black and Native Americans, Christian art, cowboys and cowgirls, firearms, and fiestas. Most of the wonderful artwork is shown in beautiful color plates and is by unknowns and lesser-knowns who are likely to invite further investigation. Oversize: 9.5x11.5<">. Annotation c. Despite their prominence in the title, the "art and artifacts" shown here serve more as illustrations to nine historical essays written by different scholars. The most satisfying essaysAGloria Fraser Giffords's on Christian Mexican art, Jane Pattie's on spurs, Becky Duval Reese's on Texas art, and Marta Turok's on Mexican fiestasAare those that integrate their discussions with the accompanying photographs. Other insightful sections include the foreword by collector J.P. Bryan (CEO of Torch Energy, Houston, Texas), the preface by editor Melissa Baldridge (Torch Collection curator), and the "photographer's statement" by George O. Jackson Jr. appended to the fiestas essay. The book has a wealth of color illustrations, but only Giffords and Turok relate the text to these images by citing their page numbers. The text is rounded out by chapters discussing Native Americans, blacks, Spanish missions, cowgirls, and firearms. Recommended for all public libraries for their Western history, art, and material culture sections.AAnne Marie Lane, American Heritage Ctr., Laramie, WY
