The communal sect founded by Ann Lee in 1774 as the United Society of Believers celebrated their love of God in the rousing dance worship that gave the Shakers their popular name. Music was also central in the Shaker woship, and their communities produced devotional music of a singular loveliness, from the folk music of the early Shakers to the more traditional, nineteenth-century hymns typical of Shaker society at its full flowering. While the Shakers have all but disappeared, interest in their way of life has never been more widespread. Presenting more than 270 hymns, this beautiful facsimile edition of the 1908 hymnal of the Canterbury Shakers preserves a vital aspect of Shaker culture. The book distills over a century of Shaker music: its quiet power and subtle beauty a testament to the Shaker vision of simplicity, proportion and harmony.
