9780879727703: The Tented Field: A History of Cricket in America

Tom Melville presents a well-documented history of cricket playing in America, focusing on its period of growth in the 1840s and its periodic revivals. Cricket failed to take on, or resisted, an American identity, but the sport had considerable appeal both as a sport and as an activity that fostered sportsmanship, control, public manners, and decorum. Cricket found acceptance mainly in the upper class but also appealed to working-class people.

From dust jacket: In the mid-1850s, cricket was the most prominent team sport in America. Bolstered by a supportive sporting press and an established international standing, the game was for many Americans of this period the team sport of first choice.

Yet within a decade, England's national pastime had been eclipsed by baseball and, by the First World War, cricket had all but vanished from the American sports landscape.
