From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3 Grey Neck, an adventurous duck, tangles with a fox and is saved by her mother, but suffers a broken wing. All is well until the family must fly south, forced to leave Grey Neck behind to face the wild alone in the dreaded Russian winter. When the little duck faces starvation, freezing, and possibly turning into lunch for a fox, a luckless rabbit hunter goes for the fox and misses, but takes Grey Neck home as a pet for his children and an egg layer for his wife. The fox loses a meal but saves his skin. So, it's a happy ending for everyone. Adapted from the Russian Seraya Sheyka by D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak, the story is a breath-taking life and death adventure for the picture book crowd. Realistic full-color illustrations merge into dramatic ink drawings to capture the story and Russia for young eyes. The anthropomorphic tendencies of the telling heighten the sense of desperation and danger that should keep younger listeners on the edge of the lap and ready for the elation of the happy ending. This is the same crowd that will later enjoy Salten's Bambi, the ones for whom Jemima Puddleduck, charming as she is, is simply not enough. Helen Gregory, Grosse Pointe Public Library, Mich.

From Publishers Weekly:

In an unfortunate encounter with a fox, a little duck known as Grey Neck is crippled and cannot join the other birds in flight as they migrate to avoid the cold Russian winter. Before leaving, Grey Neck's mother tells him to stay near the center of the river where the water doesn't freeze. Grey Neck is rescued from loneliness by a perky but timid white rabbit. As the hole of water freezes up and grows smaller, the duck becomes more vulnerable and exposed to the fox's wiles. A hunter enters the scene, and the story reaches its unexpected but satisfying conclusion, in a telling that sometimes bristles with suspense. Rudolph's translation is straightforward and refined but retains the idiomatic flavor of another culture. Kronz's handsome illustrations combine pen-and-ink drawings with full-color paintings rendered in a realistic manner that is both elegant and compelling. Ages 3-7.
