From the Author
After working for the better part of my adult life with mythologies from various parts of the world, I approached this epic of my own culture aprehensively. The translation I read in my childhood was monotonously sing-song and dense -- eroneously so, I was happy to discover when I found the more recent fine versions of Bosley, Magoun, and Friberg. I was attracted by the strong female characters and the revelation in Vaino, the man born old, of the value of wisdom gathered in childhood.
