The Talmud is a collection of teachings of the major Jewish scholars between 200 and 500 C.E., the classic period of rabbinic Judaism. It deals with all religious and civil law, as well as some legends and folklore. If one reads one page per day, it takes seven and a half years to complete. Neusner, a research professor of religious studies at the University of South Florida and professor of religion at Bard College, examines such aspects of the subject as the importance of Talmudic study and why it is important in today's society, what it tells us about deeds and beliefs, and how beliefs make laws necessary. He defines the unique quality of Talmudic study and tells why it attracts the many generations of Jews. Neusner also examines such issues as responsibility and intentionality. This scholarly work will make equally enlightening reading for those who are already versed in the subject and those who come to it for the first time. George Cohen
