In September 2008, Mercer University, Evangelicals for Human Rights, and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture held a national summit on torture. The election soon after of a president who immediately called for a halt to US torture did not do away with the issues and the controversies addressed by the 15 papers, sermons and reflections, and insights from the next generation. They discuss the road to Abu Ghraib, how the US military responded to the drift toward torture, what torture does to human beings, what the torture debate reveals about American Christianity, an assessment of and reflection on Guantánamo from people who have been there, sacred bodies and inspirited flesh, imagine the sojourner, tortured truth, the religious roots of human rights, healing the American Christian relationship with the Muslim world, violence finds refuge in falsehood, religious torture in the war on terror, the dark knight of the American soul, a theological reflection on CIA black sites, and national security and a practical way forward. Responses follow most of the offerings. There is no index. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Book Description Mercer University Press, United States, 2010. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. This is an extraordinary collection on the sin of torture. This collection of essays suggests that American counterterrorism policies in the Bush years were immoral, unwise, and un-American, and offers considerable detailed analysis to back up such claims. Several dozen specialists in various aspects of law, ethics, politics, and religion analyze both how our nation drifted into such egregious policies and what resources can be drawn upon to pull us out of them, once and for all. The book is unique in its interdisciplinary and interfaith quality. It contains insider accounts from people who served in the military during the Bush years as well as those who have been to Guantanamo and represented clients there. It offers probing religious and ethical analysis from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim perspectives. This is the most decisive analysis and repudiation of Bush detainee policies to be found anywhere in print. The book should be appealing to activists who have worked on this issue, people of multiple faith perspectives, academics from various disciplines, and concerned and interested citizens.
