Synopsis
This volume presents detailed protocols for surgical treatment, perioperative management, and rehabilitation of patients with severe musculoskeletal and/or spinal injuries caused by high-energy impact. The protocols were developed by the expert orthopaedic surgeons, general surgeons, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and physical and occupational therapists at Harborview Medical Center's orthopaedic trauma facility in Seattle, Washington. The first ten chapters describe the trauma surgeon's role in orthopaedic trauma management and present comprehensive guidelines on nursing care, psychosocial management, anesthesia, postoperative pain control, and rehabilitation. The remaining twenty chapters provide protocols for surgical treatment of high-energy impact injuries in each region of the musculoskeletal system and spine. Emphasis is placed on the surgical problems and potential complications that distinguish these injuries from routine fractures.
