Reviews

This is the second volume in Edward Augustus Bowles' endearing trilogy first published in 1914 and 1915. (The third volume will be republished later.) Bowles (1865^-1956) spent his life gardening and writing about gardening at his Myddelton House estate in England. He writes about such plants as wisterias, irises, roses, geraniums, poppies, peonies, cacti, daisies, carnations, aloes, asters, and clematis. But the book is much more than a vivid description of flowers; Bowles takes readers on a tour of his sumptuous garden--the rose garden and the flowering meadow, around the pond, and past the rock garden--amusing them with stories, advice, opinions, and wisdom. He talks about water voles ("unpleasant creatures"), saw-flies ("villainous"), cabbage moths ("robbers and murderers"), and moorhens ("jolly birds"). English botanist Peter Barnes has updated all the plant names in this charming book that includes 24 black-and-white illustrations and 16 colorplates. George Cohen
