Fazil Iskander (b. 1929), one of the Soviet Union's most popular writers, is a native of Abkhazia, an Autonomous Republic bordering on the Black Sea within the Soviet Republic of Georgia, and the background for many of his works. He began as a poet, but is best known for his stories and novellas, particularly The Goatibex Constellation, Sandro of Chegem, and The Gospel According to Chegem.
