On the steamy streets of old New Orleans, a Roman Catholic priest devoted to his ministerial duties by day, sets out to save souls by night as a member of a motor-cycle gang. Warren La Coste shares his true story of coming face to face with sex, violence, life and death as a member of the gang. For two and one-half years, Father Warren or the "Renegade Priest" as other members of the Renegade Gang called him, traveled this adventurous road. On it, he was initiated into an exciting but dangerous world he had never before known existed. There, sexually provocative biker mommas, one hundred m.p.h. "crack on" races and treacherous knife fights challenged his world view and more than once threatened his very existence. "The macho feelings and the empty thrills would have soon been overshadowed by activities of which I did not approve, but I became committed to the bikers by the very essence of my call to priesthood, namely to lead men to God. The tight rope I had to walk was a balancing act between values and persistent indiscretions. My constant inner dialogue revolved around questions: Was I accomplishing (saving) more than I was losing? Was I helping men to find God or was I condoning evil? And worst of all, was I doing the right thing for the wrong reason?" Father Warren's faith was constantly tested as he "blindly stumbled into camouflaged traps" and into a trap of his own making with the wife of his gang leader friend. Finally, in his most deadly trial, he faces down the entire gang to stop them from an act of bloody revenge. In so doing, he barely escapes with his life. From Publishers Weekly:
In this clumsy memoir, former Roman Catholic priest La Coste tells of his dalliance with a motorcycle gang at an indeterminate time. Shortly before his ordination, the author crossed paths with Mickey Manuel, a family friend who was running with the Renegades, a group of New Orleans bikers. Soon La Coste, by then a priest, was riding a Harley-Davidson with the Renegades and providing the bikers with spiritual guidance. While keeping his self-imposed mission secret from his colleagues and parishioners, La Coste bumbled through one misadventure after another, experiences that he recounts here with little insight. A growing attraction between La Coste and Mickey's wife Cheryl was not consummated, but led the priest to question his commitment to celibacy. Eventually he left the Renegades and then the priesthood, becoming a salesman.
