Capt. James Atkinson Smith loved the outdoors. Born in Connecticut, a state rich in wildlife, Smith learned how to hunt, fish and trap by age 12. Through trial and error and the coaching of his father and grandfather, he perfected his skills at field- dressing, skinning and preparing all the animals or birds he bagged.
Being an accomplished marksman had of course helped his hunting endeavors. As a U.S. Marine during the Korean conflict, he earned the Expert Rifleman's Badge and became an instructor in the use of small arms. The title "Captain" comes from Smith's 30-plus years in law enforcement. He began his career in 1952, as Chief Constable in his home state and later became Deputy Chief of Police. He held a sixth degree black belt in judo and karate and he taught defense procedures at various police academies.Review:
Finally, a practical guide to field-dressing tools and techniques in the size you need. -- Chip Mercer, President, Southeastern Book Travelers and avid hunter
If you are a multi-game hunter, then this soft-covered 160-page, well-illustrated book by Capt. James A. Smith belongs right alongside your rifle, shotgun, handgun or bow and arrow whenever you go afield. -- Ed Noonan, The Daily Gazette, January 17, 2008
It covers in detail literally all game animals and waterfowl in the United States. It's small and will fit into a hunting coat pocket, but its 168 pages are packed with instructions for field dressing game. -- Don Lewis, Leader Times; December 14, 2007
It's a dandy pocket book, one every hunter should carry, as it completely covers all kills from moose to wild boar, woodcock to wild turkey, green-winged teal to Canada goose. Small book. Small price. Super value! -- Betty Sodders, Whitetails Unlimited, Summer 2008
The guide is a nice, handbook-sized book loaded with very clear instructions on field-dressing pretty much anything you'll encounter in the US. Even though I've done my share of animals, some of what I read in the little book will definitely be helpful when I get ready to do my next animal. For a new hunter, I think these instructions could be really useful... although you may want to do your studying before you have an animal on the ground. You wouldn't want to bloody the pages of this excellent guide. -- Phillip Loughlin, JHO Journal, October 29, 2007
This handy little book includes many tips (for example, the hide of a wild boar must be "debristled" before it's dressed). The book is a reference for dealing with more than 35 species of North American game, and so it would come in especially handy for the hunter who plans on hunting for a species for the first time. -- Javier Serna, The News & Observer (Raleigh, NC), November 22, 2007
This pocket-size pocket guide is intended as an illustrated instruction for field dressing game: big, small, and winged. Smith instructs with both step-by-step words and line-art illustration. He also includes field, descriptions, habitat, range and hunting info on many popular game animals and birds. If there is a constructive criticism with this work it would be that the illustrations are too small. I would have greatly preferred less animal encyclopedia and more space devoted to larger illustrations of the field dressing processes. Still books that explain how to field dress, skin, pluck and carry out more than 35 species of game animals are rare, and this book steps informatively into that void. -- Terry Sheely; Reel Books In Review; November 2007
