Book by Lewis, Thomas A.

Over 20 award-winning photographers contributed over 100 spectacular images to nature writer Lewis's text for this very large format book. It is arranged in six chapters, each covering the animals of a particular habitat (forest, mountain, prairie, coast, sea, tundra, and desert). Because so many species are included, the accompanying text is necessarily brief. The captions are, however, informative. The glory of the book is the color photographs?they are superb, each and every one. The large format makes them all the more enjoyable, from a close-up of a snarling wolf so vivid one can feel his breath to freezing vistas of Dall's sheep on an Alaskan mountain. Still, the high price is discouraging. Recommended for photography collections; an optional choice for natural history collections.?Nancy J. Moeckel, Miami Univ. Libs., Oxford, OH
