Wally stepped up to the wicket, the people flowing around him like lambs around a sheepdog, and smashed his fist against the plywood wicket with the Closed sign in front of it. There was a splintering sound, and then a sharp crack as the piece........

From the Inside Flap:

While the active members of the Church meet under the direction of Bishop Wills, the inactives and non-Mormons have their own meeting - playing poker, betting money they can't afford to lose, and jokingly calling themselves the Lone Rock Second Ward.  Here in Lone Rock people's lives cross, sometimes even touch for a while.  Which of these touching will come to mean something?Wally Doone was pulled from the burning McHugh house.  No one knows why he was there or why he later wrote a letter to God, but Wally has been acting strangely ever since.  And on the day of the fire, Tessie McHugh disappeared.  Some think Tessie died in the house, others wonder if it was her hot-tempered husband, Dan, who drove her away.Lazy, work-shy Yarn Taylor thinks a lot about the fortunes he could make elsewhere. Full of smoldering resentment, he wonders why his wife, the Relief Society president, can't save some compassionate service for him.  Jake Ellis is warm, kind, and generous, yet still considers himself unfit to be a Mormon.  Can Woodrow Williams radiate the gospel love he feels and convert Jake, or will some act leave him seething for "justice," as he has against Dan?An excellently crafted story set in a small prairie town in Alberta in the 1930s, Circle of Fire revolves around the lives of Lone Rock's citizens.  Physical fire, emotional fire, gospel fire - depicting such forces, the author skillfully draws you, the reader, into the lives and loves of the characters until he makes you a willing part of the circle.
