Forty contributors offer stories of the literary figure, depicting his struggle with poverty and alcoholism and his redemption by love and fame

This collection of reminiscences about Carver (1938-88) form a singular vision of a master of the American short story ("Where I'm Calling From," "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love," to name but two). Through many voices we learn of Carver's working-class origins, his painful first marriage, his battle with alcoholism, his self-deprecating teaching style, and his ultimate happiness until his death from cancer at the age of 50. The tributes (some published previously) include essays, poems, and letters from a panoply of contributors: writers (including Joyce Carol Oates, Tobias Wolff, and poet Tess Gallagher, Carver's second wife); former students; and other admirers, such as Carver's Japanese translator and his longtime typist. Though no formal biography has yet been published, this composite is a valuable contribution because it shows the many human sides of a legend. Highly recommended.
