This is a supplementary dictionary of the Spanish spoken in the state of Texas by approximately 2 and a half-million Mexican-Americans or Chicanos, representing about 23% of the population of that state, and constituting roughly 38% of the roughly 6 1/2 million persons of Spanish surname in the five state area of the United States Southwest. By supplementary we mean that this dictionary lists, defines in English and, when necessary, exemplifies through citations of likely conversational usage all those words and phrases used in Texas Spanish but not included, as yet, in the more readily available reference lexicons. Our nearly 7000 entries represent, then, the words and phrases one cannot locate in the widely distributed monolingual-Spanish or bilingual Spanish-English dictionaries. The user is advised a forehand that this is not a full-length dictionary for the simple reason that it does not give items which form part of standard Spanish as defined by the several canons of inclusion in those monolingual and bilingual dictionaries which aim at omnivorous coverage and whose total entries, in consequence, run somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000. Our dictionary, then, is intended for use alongside a full-length lexicon.
