Rolli rolls from one adventure to the next, wondering who he is and where he belongs, until with the help of a mole he takes root and sprouts into a flower

PreSchool-Grade 3 These simple shapes and bright colors are so like preschoolers' own exuberant paintings that youngsters will take a special pleasure in this book's illustrations. Rolli is a seed who lives out his life on these pages. With Mole's help he rests from his wanderings, lies fallow until spring, then blooms in summer into the loveliest flower imaginable. When the rains come and Rolli's stem suddenly snaps, mole remains by him waiting for the sun to come out again. Two seeds pop out of Rolli's flower and a new Rolli comes to life, somersaulting along the ground, so that the first and last pages of this book are the same, and the cycle of nature is continued. Children love stories of transformation, and this highly anthropomorphic book will stimulate their curiosity and imaginations. If it were possible to tire of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Philomel, 1981), this would make a satisfying substitution for a classroom or library storyteller.
