Text: English, German (translation)From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3 Grimms' tale, ``The Table, the Donkey and the Stick,'' is presented here in a readable translation. Tharlet's illustrations showing dear little round-faced elf-like people with wispy hair and pointy noses have a comical quality. Pale browns and blues predominate the watercolor and pencil scenes of the tailor's tiny, plain stone cottage and the medieval-style inn. In contrast, Paul Galdone's The Table, the Donkey, and the Stick (McGraw Hill, 1976; o.p.), which is only slightly shorter than this version, is illustrated with Galdone's familiar bold and humorous style. His figures, while comical, are more realistic than Tharlet's, and his style is more vigorous than hers. Collections would be well served by either version.
