Although the abandoned egg picked up and hatched by Mr. and Mrs. Seabird yields a turtle unlike the baby bird from their own egg, the lessons they have to impart seem to apply to both young creatures equally.

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Every spring, Mr. and Mrs. Seabird look forward to the arrival of two eggs. When only one appears, the disappointed couple adopts an egg they find buried in the sand. On hatching day, the happy parents greet Bertie, a baby seabird, and Sandy, a baby turtle. When the hatchlings are ready to venture out of the nest, Bertie reaches for the sky and Sandy glides into the water, but they have similar experiences as they hunt for food and appreciate their surroundings. And both return safely to the nest. The story is presented in a vertical format that makes the book awkward to open and handle. Many of the textured pastel illustrations, rendered in unappealing monotone shades, are disrupted by the gutter. In attempting to stress the similarities between the sky and the sea, Carrier reduces these environments to abstract terms, resulting in a combination of vague text and surreal artwork that will have little appeal to the intended audience. --Joy Bisesto, Carngeie Library of Pittsburgh
