Badlands National Park in southwestern South Dakota, first set aside in 1939 to preserve magnificently eroded scenery and fossils, became a National Park in 1978.

About the Author
Joseph W. Zarki is a career National Park Service employee. A Maryland native, Joe has a bachelor's degree in history from Gettysburg College. His career has taken him to Badlands, Death Valley, Denali, Yellowstone, and Joshua Tree National Parks and Tuzigoot National Monument.
