This thoroughly annotated study guide is a wonderful way for second-year students of Chinese to approach the language as utilized in full dramatic action. The complete text of the film February (Zaochun Eryue, 1963), adapted by director Xie Tieli from the novella "Early Spring" by Rou Shi, is reproduced so that students may follow along with the videotape. New words, idioms and unusual expressions are explicated in extensive notes. Knowledge of basic Chinese grammatical principles is assumed. February was produced just before a comprehensive clampdown by the Chinese government. The film and those involved with it became subject to intense criticism-not until the early 1980s were Chinese filmmakers able to begin again from the same ground. Includes text and explanatory matter in both Traditional and Simplified characters (on facing pages); new words and phrases are accompanied by Pinyin.
