9780887306624: Investing for Good: Making Money While Being Socially Responsible

Synopsis

Proving that it is possible to make wise and profitable investments while still being socially conscious, this book details how to build a profitable portfolio that consists solely of ethically aware companies. It provides complete instructions for selecting, researching and screening potential investment opportunities for a wide range of social concerns - whether or not a company is "green", whether it has defense contracts, what its employee policies and community relations are like, what kind of overseas interests it maintains, how its products or services tally with an investor's preferences and more. The "Domini Social Index" helps readers control and direct their own funds even if invested in mutual funds, pension plans or stocks and bonds. Kinder, Lydenberg and Domini are the authors of "Ethical Investing" and "The Social Investment Almanac 1992".

From Library Journal

The authors, partners in a firm that tracks the social performance of top U.S. corporations, provide a basis for investors to decide whether or not an investment is socially responsible. Investors subscribing to this method use their influence in three areas: guideline portfolio investing, in which investors screen publicly traded companies within social guidelines; activist investing, in which investors apply their influence to get a company to act in a socially responsible manner; and community investing, in which investors engage in activities that improve local conditions. In great detail, the authors demonstrate how these three areas are essential to social investing and support the notion that the rewards for investing are substantial. They describe their methodology for determining the status of a company's worthiness. Thought-provoking concepts dealing with the issues of our times abound in this useful, understandable tome that belongs in general business collections.

From Publishers Weekly

Kinder, Lydenberg and Domini, the coauthors of The Social Investment Almanac , seek to help the reader resolve two questions: "How can I implement my political objectives in my investment decision-making?" and "How can I participate in the redirection of capital for the greater good?" Increasingly, individuals and investment institutions, note the authors, use their power as shareholders to influence corporate policy on such matters as environmental responsibility and treatment of women and minorities. They describe the use of "screens" to discourage investment in companies producing alcohol, tobacco or munitions; dealing with South Africa; or otherwise pursuing "unethical" policies. Pointing out that institutions and mutual funds now own more than 50% of all publicly traded stock, and acknowledging that this fact may potentially cloud management procedure, the authors demonstrate a fresh, progressive outlook on corporate accountability, which they find entirely compatible with profitability.
