The purpose of this study of the interaction between the scholar and scholarly literature is to identify for electronic journal systems designers, those aspects of that interaction which are fundamental to scholarship. Interviews were conducted with 46 scholars in the social sciences, physical sciences, and humanities in two major universities. The interviews explore the scholars' use of journal literature, their styles of reading it, their perceptions of the advantages of reading journal literature in printed form, and their speculations on using it in electronic form. The results indicate spceific functions and principles of design for a system of electronic journals.

Will electronic access to information replace print and what will the consequences be for research and education? Olsen, director of the Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University, presents a study of 46 scholars at two universities exploring the use of journal literature in printed form. Through analysis of interviews with scholars in the fields of chemistry, sociology, and English, the author defines the current use of journal literature and delineates the processes fundamental to scholarship. The interviewees support the idea of electronic access to journals but express concern that future development emphasize scholars' needs. The importance of graphics was stressed by most, though, to date, electronic access has usually concentrated on text while graphics are eliminated. Other serious difficulties with current electronic access are also noted, and Olsen concludes his book with the future possibilities for the development of improved forms of electronic access. An important step in the evaluation of electronic journal access, this is recommended for academic professional reading collections.
