This well-loved storybook has been reissued with enhanced reproduction and many newly created illustrations just in time for a warm Christmas read under a cozy quilt by the light of a flickering fire.

Ten-year-old Lucy is a pioneer girl in the Upper Canada of 1800. Her imagination fired by the schoolmaster’s stories of Christmas memories, Lucy sets about making a special Yuletide gift — something her frail mother will be able to remember and cherish forever. But even with the unwelcome help of her little brother, Dan, making one hundred handmade candles to light on Christmas night is a daunting task. Limited supplies and resources make the job that much harder, but in the end it is Lucy’s own bossiness that nearly causes a disaster. Deeply disappointed in herself, Lucy accepts the sacrifice Dan offers to make, and together the children manage to create the most wonderful of all Christmases.

One Hundred Shining Candles, written by one of Canada’s best writers for children, shows readers of all ages the true joy of giving from the heart. Delicate illustrations throughout perfectly depict this gentle story set against harsh times.

About the Author:
Tundra’s JANET LUNN is the author of several award-winning books, including The Root Cellar, Come to the Fair, and, with Christopher Moore, The Story of Canada. Her honors include the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year Award, and the Vicky Metcalfe Award for a Body of Work. She has been awarded the Order of Ontario, and is a member of the Order of Canada. She was born in Dallas, Texas, grew up in rural Vermont, and lived in Canada for over fifty years. She passed away in 2017.

Tundra’s LINDSAY GRATER is an illustrator and artist who has worked on a wide variety of projects. These include illustrations for many picture books, four of which she wrote, and artwork for magazines and packaging. She also enjoys making her own prints and paintings and lives in a converted rural schoolhouse near Mount Forest, Ontario.
From Kirkus Reviews:
A much-honored Canadian author tells a heartwarming Christmas story set in a wilderness cabin in 1800. With Ma ill, Pa tells Lucy and Dan that there can be no presents this year. Then their schoolmaster's story of an elegant city celebration gives them an idea: using the family's carefully stored tallow and precious red madder, they will make at least a few candles to surprise their parents and brighten the holiday. And so they do, with just a few setbacks. An appealing frontier story; the gentle full-color illustrations, in nicely varied frames, are as attractive as the long but easily read text.
