Join one special boy on a journey through Topsy-Turvy Town. The place he lives is a town where it rains broccoli that crunches when it lands on the tops of umbrellas, where police officers march to a very different beat, where you can go fishing in your living room or even juggle a wildcat before bedtime. But not everybody shares his vision of Topsy-Turvy Town. His big sister thinks the very idea is crazy. His aunt thinks he’s making it up. As for Dad, he ignores the weird and wonderful things his son sees. Luckily, he can share his imaginative world with someone who understands, his mom.

A young boy describes his imaginary world, Topsy-Turvy Town, where broccoli rains down on umbrellas, cars are made of chocolate with pineapple wheels, and buildings move about on toy soldierlike legs. His sister thinks he is crazy; his aunt claims he is making it all up; Dad just continues reading the newspaper. The boy understands the town is only a figment of his imagination—but he is still glad Mom believes him. This translation of Ma drole de ville (2004) features minimal text and surrealistic, Magritte-inspired art. Quirky, elongated cartoon characters engage in strange behaviors (boating in the living room pond, where a fish smokes a pipe; sharing a bath with a robot; juggling a wildcat before bed) that are sure to intrigue young readers. Here is an alternative universe that is peculiar but never feels threatening. Quebecer Melanson, known previously for illustrating Nan Gregory’s Pink (2007) and Olivier Ka’s My Great Big Mama (2009), produces stylish art that should appeal to sophisticated viewers, especially fans of Mini Grey’s Traction Man books. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Kay Weisman
