Vancouver’s Edwardian wood frame houses now stand in the shadow of highrises; her few cobblestone streets reflect neon lights in the rain, and her turn-of-century mansions look out onto the terraces of condos. Only scattered reminders of the earlier city still exist: An old brick facade on Hastings Street, a giant fir stump in Point Grey. But Vancouver’s past comes alive in the pages of this book. As a counterpoint to the photographs the editors (all staff members of the Urban Reader, a bimonthly published by the city) have selected quotations from diaries and journals and excerpts form the newspapers of the day. A capsule history begins each chapter.
