In this episodic tale that’s rich with Cary Fagan’s characteristically dry humor, a boy tells the story of his life with two older brothers. When he is only a week old, his brothers argue over who can hold him first and drop him onto the porch. But they aren’t all bad: they chase away the mean girls who call him names, and they perform a play starring the neighbor’s dog to cheer him up when he has the measles. Later on these troublesome boys set fire to neighbor’s tree, play football in the living room, and even attempt to ride their banana bikes all the way to the Rocky Mountains. Inspired by Cary Fagan’s childhood experiences, this story is a spot-on portrayal of the crazy, mishap-filled, yet undeniably fun and affectionate life in a family with three boys. Luc Melanson’s wonderfully lively and extremely funny retro-style illustrations are a perfect complement to the text.

From Booklist:

“Sometimes we get along and sometimes we don’t. But there are still a lot of things we want to do together.” Never sentimental, the warm, wry scenarios in this picture book explore sibling relationships from a younger child’s viewpoint that speaks about the shared fun and the friction, the rivalry, the protection, and the love. Each double-page spread is a stand-alone story, with detailed words and lots of action and emotion in the digital art. The big brothers comfort the narrator after he accidentally kills his pet lizard, but they also play tricks on him. They get in trouble together after they throw firecrackers into a hollow tree in a neighbor’s yard, and the boy loves it when he and his brothers share secrets. But sometimes the youngest brother isn’t ready to join his older siblings in activities and conversations: he does not want to listen when his parents explain where babies come from, for example; he would rather build a robot out of blocks. The familiar family scenes will grab brothers and sisters, older and younger. Preschool-Grade 2. --Hazel Rochman

From School Library Journal:

K-Gr 3–In this fictionalized story, the author reminisces about what it was like to live with two older brothers. The trio will make readers giggle with delight as the boys' escapades, teasing, and love capture the warmth and fireworks of sibling dynamics. The 1970s retro-style illustrations reflect the mood and tone, and color choices accent the setting, creating a shared story from the past. Although there are many sibling books on the shelves, this fresh approach to fraternal relationships makes a welcome purchase where family stories are needed.Melissa Smith, Green Valley Library, Henderson, NV
