Synopsis
A two-volume monograph on the art and life of Mihail Chemiakin through 1985.
Volume 1 describes the artist's early years in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), his artistic theories and early drawings, still lifes, illustrations and portraits along with photographs of the "happenings" in Chemiakin's studio and on the streets of Leningrad; his forced departure for France and his life and work there.
Volume 2 is dedicated to Chemiakin's series of "Transformations" - reinterpretations of existing art works or artifacts; and to his first five years in the United States, where he continued to experiment with new techniques and themes, creating series of works in pastel on black paper and large textured paintings. Throughout the two volumes Chemiakin comments extensively on his own work and on the work of his contemporaries, both Russian and European.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Oversized hardcover with DJ. Black cloth over boards with gold lettering on the front cover and on the spine. Measures 10.5 x 12.5". No date on title page. Copyright date 1986. 476 pages. In excellent condition. The binding is square and strong despite the book's large size. The corners are just barely bumped, and the covers are clean and crisp. The artist, Chemiakin, signed the half title page. Chemiakin is a well known Russian painter and a rather controversial representative of the nonconformist art tradition of St. Petersburg. This book contains hundreds of works by the artist as well as some text throughout in English. A very good copy. This is volume 2 only. We also have volume 1, also signed by the artist, in our inventory. This is an oversized (and overweight) book. Extra shipping charges may be required for international or priority delivery.
