Grade 5-7-- Uninspiring characters and a slow moving plot are only two of the problems with this book. John Hawk, born of a black slave mother and white master father, escapes slavery by running away with Osceola, the great Seminole warrior. The two lead the Seminoles in their fight against the United States government's attempt move the Indians west. Unfortunately, the characters are never developed sufficiently for readers to care about them. The dialogue ranges from colloquial and sugary to far too contemporary and slangy for the early 1800s. Too much feeling and emotion is told rather than shown. When John Hawk is captured, "He experienced a soul-rending savage anguish at the loss of his freedom." Such overwriting will not draw readers to the suffering character. The historical background which readers will need to understand the story is inserted throughout as short encyclopedic entries; there is little attempt to blend it with the action at hand. Scott O'Dell's Sing Down the Moon (Houghton, 1970) gives readers characters and an interesting story which builds an empathy with the plight of native American Indians and their deplorable treatment by the U.
