In the heyday of her success she is said to have banked $700,000 in one ten-month period. She enriched the nation's idiom with a cascade of wisecracks and eccentric salutations, such as "Hello, sucker!" and "big-butter-and-egg man," and despite the doubtful artistic talents of her female performers she insisted that her patrons "give the little girl a big hand." Born on a ranch near Waco, Texas, circa 1891, she was christened Mary Louise Cecilia Guinan. Her career ranged from the silver screen of Hollywood to Broadway [to Paris]. XX GLENN SHIRLEY, well-known authority on the law-and-order West, has written nearly a score of books and hundreds of articles for anthologies, regional and national magazines. He also has served variously as contributing editor and historical consultant. His hobbies are collecting Western Americana, lecturing at history seminars and short courses in professional writing. He is a member of numerous historical societies and writers organizations.
