From Library Journal:

While those individuals at risk or who already have heart disease would benefit greatly from this comprehensive volume, any person with an interest in learning about the heart and its connection to other systems in the body will find this book fascinating and highly informative. It is written at a fairly high educational level but incorporates medical terms with their definitions in such a way that it is very readable, both in format and content. Divided into six sections, this comprehensive work covers the heart and its function, discusses ways to lower one's risk of heart disease, and explains how diagnoses are made. It also includes an Encyclopedia of Common Heart Disorders that lists major cardiovascular disorders and treatments, and special sections on women, different ethnic and racial groups, and age groupings. Charts and tables abound, including ways to rate one's own heart risk and advice on changing to a healthier lifestyle. This book not only tells the reader what to change but also details how to do it. However, it skims over the emotional aspects of heart disease and should have done more with patients' rights and responsibilities. But in all other aspects, it is the most in-depth, comprehensive lay text this reviewer has ever seen. It would be invaluable in any health collection and is highly recommended. From Publishers Weekly:

Zaret, Moser and Cohen, in one of the most comprehensive looks yet taken at cardiovascular health, leave no stone unturned in their quest to educate the public in this user-friendly, browsable volume. Here one finds easy-to-understand descriptions of heart disease and other cardiovascular maladies--heart attacks, hypertension, strokes, cardiac arrhythmias, rheumatic heart disease. In addition to explanations of the various tests and procedures for evaluating and monitoring cardiovascular conditions, tables detail what the most commonly prescribed drugs can and cannot do. And although many of us are weary of hearing about good and bad cholesterol, the good doctors make it a point to say that these should not be ignored. For anyone facing cardiovascular surgery, or knowing someone in need of it, descriptions of the newest offerings in bypass and other state-of-the-art techniques will prove useful. But equally important is the sound advice--no-nonsense, not threatening--about maintaining good cardiovascular health through diet, exercise and stress reduction. Especially helpful is an extensive end-of-the-book encyclopedia of common cardiovascular disorders and symptoms, and a directory of resources. Zaret, Moser and Cohen are professors at the Yale University School of Medicine.
