Her research is based on the documents of planters from the early 1820s through the 1850s and into Reconstruction, as well as on WPA interviews with former slaves, giving a balanced view of this short but crucial chapter in Texas history. The exquisite pen and brushwork of noted Texas artist and illustrator Shaw gives details of the food, shelter, clothing, and recreation of the plantation family as well as the slaves.
