In this how-to book for the would-be desktop publishing entrepreneur, Neff concentrates on strategies and techniques for starting, maintaining, and enhancing a business in this field. This type of operation requires both hardware and software. The author's discussion and analysis of hardware options is thorough and useful; his treatment of software options is somewhat limited. Tips for equipment financing and office setup are quite helpful. The strongest area is the discussion of techniques and strategies for marketing and promoting desktop publishing and computer graphics services: how to enter a market, publicize one's services, network the community, obtain and hold clients, collaborate with other professionals, and make the most of what you have available. Neff also discusses what for some publishing professionals is the more unpleasant side of the operation--the business angle. A useful book for someone starting out, or already in, this line of work.
