Hendershot, a self-taught artist, is a master of the Andrew style of textureAwhite Pennsylvania farmhouses, in grainy shadows over weathered clapboards, snow-covered ground with patches of fallen brown oak leaves, and the multiple layers of color in the flat stone walls of barns. In 17 mini-demonstrations, 21 exercises, and five full-length painting demos, he explores spatters, splatters, and spritzes to full effect. Several books, such as Ray Campbell Smith's Fresh Watercolour: Bring Light to Your Painting (David & Charles, 1995), stress light while exploring texture. Hendershot's book, on the other hand, takes light into consideration, of course, but more thoroughly explores techniques for capturing surfaces that astonish the viewer. Highly recommended.
