Synopsis
Tales of the Resistance contains 12 stories about Scarboy's (aka Hero) participation in the underground Taxi Resistance against the evil Enchanter, challenger to the one True King. High drama unfolds as everywhere Hero turns there are suffering people in need of his help, like Doubletalk, Triple Tongue, Sewer Rat, Boiler Brat, the Most Beautiful Player of All, the Forbidden Princess, and the Carnival Daughter. Can Hero help them while escaping the Enchanter's Revenge or be subject to the terrors of Traffic Court and Burning Place? This is the second title in a trilogy of inspiring short stories to read with your children. Grade 6-9 ``Once upon a time there was a lad, with boyhood behind him and manhood close, who heard the call of the King to follow him to the Enchanted City. . . .'' The lad, Hero, heeds the call of the King, and so begin the adventures and challenges in Tales of the Resistance, a series of allegorical Christian stories which form the sequel to the author's Tales of the Kingdom (Cook, 1983). The writing is good and the tales are engrossing. Readers, however, should be forewarned that many fundamentalists will probably find this mystical, inner-city ``Dungeons and Dragons'' portrayal of Christ and Christianity objectionable.
