Kindred is the recipient of the 1991 "Red Smith Award" chosen by the Associated Press Sports Editors Association for lifetime achievement in sports journalism, and the 1997 "National Sportswriter of The Year" award chosen by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Kindred is currently president of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
