The 30 African photographers selected for this pioneering anthology challenge long-standing Western misconceptions about Africa. Created from the beginnings of the continent's struggles for independence to the postcolonial present, their diverse works include studio portraiture and architectural views from the 1940s and 1950s; photojournalism from Drum, the influential South African magazine that celebrated and critiqued life in the 1950s; scenes of the activities of cosmopolitan youth in the 1960s and 1970s; and contemporary art that addresses more personal concerns, from issues of identity and representation of the body, to formal studies exploring the symbolism of light and darkness. Okwui Enwezor's and Octavio Zaya's probing essays discuss photographic representation, Western perceptions of Africa and the changing self-images of Africans over this period of profound transformation. Olu Oguibe's text illuminates the nature and uses of the image in African history and traditions. Also included are artists' biographies and personal statements.

From Library Journal:
This survey of African photographers accompanies an exhibit of the same name at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The production quality is excellent, as is the selection of photographs (from museums, archives, and private collections). Each of 30 African photographers (some of them Afrikaners and other Caucasians) from many religions and nationalities are represented by a small sampling of his of her diverse output, only hinting at the work being done in Africa during the last half of this century. The images date from the struggles for independence to the present postcolonial period. Largely concerned with Western and African perceptions of Africa and the emergence of a modern (and more Westernized) self-image, the footnoted essays do not attempt a full history of African photography but discuss such subjects as photographic ethnography, reality and representation, propaganda and truth, and the effects of technological advances on the creation of visual imagery of a continent. This book will find a warm welcome among interested lay readers and scholars alike. Recommended for photohistory, ethnographic, and African history collections.?Kathleen Collins, New York Transit Museum Archives, Brooklyn
