This newest addition to the Museum's popular Looking At series provides definitions of the technical terms most often encountered by museum-goers and student of post-antique European sculpture. The book enhances the appreciation of the art form by explaining the methods used in creating sculpture and the terms used by scholars to describe it.

Featured are clear, concise explanations to questions such as: What is a socle? What are the steps in bronze casting? What is contrapposto? Written for the non-specialist and lavishly illustrated with objects from the Getty Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, this book is invaluable to anyone who wants to learn more about the art of sculpture.

About the Author:

Peggy Fogelman is Associate Curator of Sculpture in the J. Paul Getty Museum's Department of Sculpture and Works of Art.

From Library Journal:

This is an excellent small dictionary, illustrated with works from the collections of the Getty and the Victoria & Albert and best suited for use in museums. Less technical in its definitions than Jack C. Rich's Materials and Methods of Sculpture (1974) and briefer than Nicholas Penny's excellent narrative The Materials of Sculpture (LJ 3/1/94), it aims to be useful to the general gallery visitor viewing post-medieval through 19th-century European sculpture. A few terms are art historical (e.g., effigy) rather than technical, but most entries define materials and techniques succinctly and very clearly. Although created almost empirically from terms encountered on the labels at the Getty and Victoria & Albert, this handy book will be useful for understanding European sculpture collections anywhere. Highly recommended.?Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Lib.
