Gr. 7-10. This retelling begins with Oedipus' perceptive answer to the Sphinx's riddle and his entry into Thebes, and ends with the blind Oedipus stumbling away from the city. A narrator, whose words appear in crimson, introduces the story and provides background, but most of the text is dialogue, adapted from the play. Although condensed, the foreshadowing and sense of doom make it a riveting story. The essential elements of the tale are here, related in stately language. The book, which is totally handmade, is as elegant as the retelling. Silk-screened illustrations, inspired by ancient Greek art, portray dramatic moments in the story. This dignified condensation makes the story more accessible for students and supplements mythology and ancient civilizations collections. Linda Perkins
